President Sahle-Work Zewde stated that the appointment of Ethiopian ambassadors this time around is symbolic, as all of them are diplomats with Foreign Service experience, and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed should be commended for taking the initiative.

Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Ambassador Nebiyu Tedla, stated this while delivering the Ministry’s biweekly press briefing today. He reiterated that the 24 new Ethiopian ambassadors were sworn in yesterday in the presence of President Sahle-Work Zewde and Foreign Minister Taye Atske-Selassie.

At the event, the President and the Foreign Minister reminded the ambassadors of the honor of serving their country, further calling on them to carry out their duties diligently. H.E. Ambassador Taye additionally encouraged the ambassadors to apply the ideas they acquired during the three-week training session to be creative, innovative, and aware of the ever-changing geopolitical landscape.

The Spokesperson also spoke about the outcomes and benefits of hosting the First Preparatory Session of the 4th Conference on Financing for Development, which was held in Addis Ababa from July 22 to 26. He said the event revitalized the conference tourism industry and boosted Ethiopia’s image while demonstrating Ethiopia’s ability to host successful international meetings.

The conference drew about 1000 participants from 140 countries, including 40 ministers and representatives of 20 civic institutions. Sideline meetings also created opportunities for Ethiopian authorities, high-level officials from participating countries and leaders of multilateral organizations to discuss various issues of mutual concern.

The briefing session also highlighted investment opportunities currently being discussed with visiting members of the Ethiopia-China Friendship and Cooperation Committee, as well as ongoing efforts to ensure the well-being of Ethiopian migrants stranded in some East Asian countries.
