The Embassy joyously commemorated the 128th Victory of Adwa under the theme “ADWA: A Victory of Black People” on March 2, 2024, at the Embassy premises. The event was graced by H.E. Mr. Puneet R. Kundal Additional Secretary of the East and Southern Africa Division, African Ambassadors and Diplomats, Representatives of Chambers, Media, University and Hospitals, Business Groups, Indian born in Ethiopia, Ethiopian residing and studying in Delhi and Staffs of the Embassy.
 
During the occasion, H.E. Ambassador Demeke Atnafu briefed the gathering about the main and immediate cause of the Battle of Adwa, and underscoring its profound significance for Ethiopia, Africa, and to all black people across the globe. He also emphasized that the Battle of Adwa marked a decisive victory for Ethiopia, making Ethiopia the first African and black nation to fully resist and defeat European colonizers in the 19th century.
 
Delving into the broader impact of the Battle of Adwa, Ambassador Demeke highlighted its contribution to the growth of Pan-Africanism, a movement that sought to unify African nations and people across the continent and became a rally emblem for the later African nationalists in their struggle for decolonization and political independence.
 
H.E. Ambassador Demeke emphasized Ethiopia’s recent pursuit of maritime access, framing it as a strategic endeavor aimed at fostering integration within the Horn of Africa. He also expounded Ethiopia’s vision for this quest, depicting it as a pathway to accelerate regional integration while underlining its potential to bolster peace and stability across the region.
 
As the evening gracefully progressed, distinguished attendees were privileged to engage in a captivating video presentation that focused on the historical event of the Battle of Adwa.
